“Fifty years ago I exhibited and sold my first painting. At the time I was a penniless art student in north London studying painting and print-making. 

The venue of the open air exhibition was a small park on the Thames Embankment near Waterloo Bridge. That first painting depicted a London bus in a London street with a strong emphasis on sunlight and shadow. 

An unknown American collector paid me £7 and took the picture away. But much more importantly he left me with a huge feeling of happiness and pride, and a fifty year commitment to make a life as an artist. The seven pounds has long gone, but the commitment, and love of London as subject matter, endures. 

These fourteen paintings and prints celebrate fifty years of painting the ‘mighty heart’ of London. I hope that you enjoy my fifty year ‘Gold’ collection as much as I have enjoyed painting and printing them."    Colin Ruffell 2008yed painting and printing them
